Conducting scientific experiments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n“First, we want to use our engineering training<\/strong> (industrial engineer, chemical engineer and electronics, electrical energy and automation engineer) to give a useful<\/strong> dimension to our crossing. We will carry out scientific sampling on board for the citizen science association Astrolabe Expeditions<\/a> . <\/p>\n\nWe participate in 3 of its marine biology programs:<\/p>\n\n
SargaSea<\/strong> : We will collect Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean, identify it and record its location, dry it, and bring it back for analysis at the University of Western Brittany. The objective of this study is to understand the processes behind the expansion of these holopelagic species, because since 2011, massive Sargassum strandings have caused major ecological, economic, and societal damage in the Caribbean, with catastrophic consequences for benthic fauna and flora and for human health. <\/p>\n\nKetos<\/strong> : We will observe the cetaceans we encounter along our route, identify them by the shape of their flippers, record them, and send the information and photos to Astrolabe Expeditions. The aim of this study is to investigate the distribution and seasonal movements of different cetacean species and to contribute to the development of identification catalogs for various marine mammal observatories. <\/p>\n\nPlanktidex<\/strong> : we will deploy plankton nets during the crossing and collect samples that we will send back. The goal is to better understand the evolution of fish species through improved identification of larvae and to better understand the spatio-temporal distribution of the many species that make up ichthyoplankton. <\/p>\n\nRaising awareness and providing local support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\nNext, we plan to meet with local environmental stakeholders<\/strong> for interviews, in a relaxed setting to exchange ideas and create awareness-raising video content<\/strong> . This will allow us to produce a mini YouTube series on environmental issues<\/strong> and the impact of humans on the ecosystems of the French West Indies. We intend to carry out environmental missions<\/strong> on the islands we visit, working with local communities. To this end, we are currently contacting as many associations as possible. We will already be meeting with three associations in Guadeloupe and one in Martinique. Through videos explaining what we do on board, interviews with the people we meet, and vlogs, we hope to raise their awareness of the marine environment<\/strong> , environmental issues<\/strong> , and the fragility of our planet<\/strong> , as well as introduce them to a different world. We will visit the fifth graders in Toulouse at their school before our departure to establish an initial connection. We would like to make them aware, from a young age, of the issues that are so important to us. <\/p>\n\n
