“In 2022, it became the most used herbicide substance in France, ahead of glyphosate,” excerpt from Socialter n\u00b073<\/a> , that sets the tone and we just want to shout: HELP! We couldn’t ignore it, we had to tell you about it. <\/p>\n\n

What is this pro-whatever thing?<\/h2>\n\n

A chemical substance that is very effective for getting rid of weeds in conventional crops of course, and whose use is only growing: between 2012 and 2022, sales of products containing prosulfocarb such as FIXY or DEFI exploded in France, going from 1000 to 7400 tonnes per year according to Socialter.<\/p>\n\n

It is spread in the autumn, just after sowing barley or wheat to avoid competition between plants; the same procedure is repeated in the spring to “protect” baby potatoes. It is clear that its use is particularly intensive in large-scale farming regions, which is all the more problematic as the substance is very volatile and likes to travel, up to several kilometers from the source: “it has an unfortunate tendency to remain suspended and move with air masses or with morning mists,” as agronomist Xavier Reboud (interviewed by Socialter) explains. <\/p>\n\n

Add to that the fact that “up to 80% of the substance can evaporate within 24 hours of application” (source: Socialter, based on Sandra Carlsen, Niels Henrik Spliid, and Bo Svensmark, ” Drift of 10 herbicides after tractor spray application<\/a> ,” Chemosphere, July 2006)… and you immediately grasp the scale of the problem. Hmm. And even though the French Agency for Food Safety (ANSES) mandates<\/a> the use of ” drift-reducing nozzles<\/a> ” to spray larger, heavier, and less volatile droplets, the results don’t seem particularly impressive. <\/p>\n\n

Cross-contamination<\/h2>\n\n

This is obviously a major problem for organic farmers: farmers committed to the label don’t use these substances, but what happens when they contaminate crops anyway? From the outside? What do we do?<\/p>\n\n

The issue is real because, in the absence of a liable third party, insurance companies are powerless. In other words, an organic producer whose harvest is downgraded due to unwanted chemical residues has no recourse but to lament the loss of revenue (and the associated work, time, etc.). Compensation is impossible in this case because who is responsible? If the source is unknown, it’s unclear who is to blame, and therefore, which insurance company can be contacted, making the claim futile. <\/p>\n\n

Syngenta, the main national seller of this substance, has implemented a mapping tool<\/a> to define treatment methods, depending on the substances and the plot in question: proximity to dwellings, water sources, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the system<\/a> is of course not binding, it is primarily informational and available to those who are interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectively, nothing prevents treating plots of land with these products. Neither the proximity of organic farms, nor the proximity of other living beings! <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Given the nature of the product in question, professional farmers are not the only ones affected: a recent study by G\u00e9n\u00e9rations Futures<\/a> shows that prosulfocarb residues are also found in private gardens<\/a> . Inevitably. If it can fly here, it can fly there too. Ultimately, we are all concerned. <\/p>\n\n

But perhaps this molecule isn’t as dangerous as all that…?<\/h2>\n\n

It has been observed that young children with presumed intensive exposure to the molecule – because they lived near cereal-growing areas – contracted cancers in the La Rochelle region. (See Socialter)<\/em><\/p>\n\n

But in reality, we don’t know much. And here I’m simply going to quote a section of the article verbatim because it’s as enlightening as it is distressing and infuriating: <\/p>\n\n

“But the fog surrounding prosulfocarb continues to thicken. Let’s try to understand how its toxicity was assessed before it was marketed. This all takes place at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). First surprise: the toxicity tests are carried out in facilities supposedly adhering to “good laboratory practices,” but funded by the manufacturers themselves. Second shock: the studies on the molecule’s carcinogenicity date back to Methuselah\u20141987 and 1988. “These protocols are obsolete because the testing guidelines were updated in 2008,”<\/em> explains Pauline Cervan, a toxicologist for G\u00e9n\u00e9rations Futures. And, third revelation, at least one of these tests was conducted haphazardly.” <\/p>\n\n

It’s a lengthy EFSA document<\/a> that reveals this. To conduct a carcinogenicity study, you need to take two groups of laboratory rats, expose one to the product, and observe whether cancers are more prevalent in the first group than in the control group after twenty-four months\u2014the time frame is crucial because, like in humans, cancer takes time to develop. The problem: in the prosulfocarb study, the majority of rats died…before reaching two years of age. “There was up to 78% mortality in one of the groups. Despite this, those in charge of the test counted the tumors on the remaining animals and concluded that there was no risk!”<\/em> exclaims Laurence Huc<\/a> , toxicologist and research director at INRAE. “The study should have been deemed non-compliant.”<\/em> And what about “good laboratory practices”? “Clearly, the EFSA ignored them,”<\/em> the scientist adds. When questioned, the EFSA acknowledged studies “of limited validity”, but “deemed valid”. <\/p>\n\n

Hmm.<\/p>\n\n

Health of the Living or of the Wallet<\/h2>\n\n

Note that for this article, neither the Ministry of Agriculture nor the FNSEA wished to respond or contribute to the subject. <\/p>\n\n

Let us also note, and this is frankly MIND-BLOWING, that on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, as on the website of the FNSEA, when you type “Prosulfocarb” in the search bar there are… 0 results! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

As is increasingly the case, the struggles are converging: the fight for a strong and healthy life here joins the fight of the wealthy against the humble. Research and analysis protocols exist, but they run up against the pesticide lobbies that cheerfully clamor in the European Parliament to defend their own interests. Socialter reports that Syngenta, for example, spent \u20ac1.5 million on lobbying in Brussels, and Bayer \u20ac6 million according to LobbyFacts<\/a> . For organic producers, permaculture practitioners, and so on, these figures are staggering, highlighting the magnitude of the issues at stake. <\/p>\n\n

I’m quoting again because really…<\/p>\n\n

Another typically European aberration: prosulfocarb should have been reassessed in 2018. But its marketing authorization has been extended every year since, without any review, and even by thirty-nine months in 2023, until early 2027. Who made this decision, a real boon for manufacturers? The answer: “Scopaff,” an obscure committee whose members are appointed by different countries. Who are they? Do they have the authority to decide to extend the authorization of potentially toxic products? “We cannot disclose their names,”<\/em> replies the European Commission. A thorough investigation by Pollinis<\/a> , which obtained access to email exchanges, shows that the arguments of the agrochemical lobby influence the discussions. <\/p>\n\n

These Scopaff are Standing Committees on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed<\/a> , and what they do or who they are is indeed quite vague:<\/p>\n\n

Standing Committees deliver opinions that inform the Commission’s work on measures that it is planning. Such measures relate to the implementation of legislation that is already adopted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commission consults the relevant committee depending on the policy area: food & feed safety, animal health & welfare and plant health. Committee members are national experts who represent EU governments and public authorities. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

These are institutions with a lot of influence and little responsibility, as Pollinis so aptly puts it…<\/p>\n\n

A struggle undertaken by citizens, associations and elected officials.<\/h2>\n\n

If you search on YouTube, you’ll find reports from Normandy and Brittany about actions taken to protect apple growers in particular, as well as consumers and local residents. It’s a bit dated, but it’s interesting. There are also testimonials from organic farmers. <\/p>\n\n

\n

The FNAB (National Federation of Organic Agriculture) had also launched a crowdfunding campaign to ban prosulfocarb<\/a> . I haven’t found any direct follow-up to this campaign, but it does speak to the mobilization of the stakeholders involved. <\/p>\n<\/div>

And what about my hops then?<\/h2>\n\n

And although we would sometimes like to be able to put the hop fields under a bell jar to protect them from all human stupidity, unfortunately, we have little power over that.<\/p>\n\n

That being said, in 2025, ANSES clarified the rules for the use of prosulfocarb<\/a> :<\/span><\/p>\n\n

    \n
  1. Use an anti-drift device during application<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Apply under optimal conditions: high humidity (>70%), mild temperatures (between 5 and 20\u00b0C), no wind, and adherence to the optimal boom height based on the nozzle angle. The minimum height is 50 cm for 110\u00b0 nozzles and 90 cm for 80\u00b0 nozzles. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Maintain a safe distance from local residents<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Wait for the harvest of non-target crops within a 1 km radius<\/strong> \/\/ hops are not currently considered “non-target” crops (the list is subject to change), but this provides a basis for discussion if needed, and despite everything<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n

    In addition to rules 1, 2 and 4, we can still offer you some peace of mind: the hop plots are not adjacent to the risk plots.<\/p>\n\n

    In short, organic farming is a fight for life and we are fighting it alongside you!<\/p>\n\n
