{"id":1281629,"date":"2021-04-08T12:23:47","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T12:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hopstore.fr\/what-is-an-organic-product\/"},"modified":"2026-07-29T16:31:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T16:31:54","slug":"what-is-an-organic-product","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hopstore.fr\/en\/what-is-an-organic-product\/","title":{"rendered":"What is an organic product?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, well, it seems obvious, but we thought it might not hurt to go back to basics \ud83d\ude09 So here we go!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A product is considered organic only if it is an <strong>agricultural product<\/strong> or <strong>foodstuff<\/strong> derived from <strong>organic farming<\/strong> and, as such, meets the requirements of <a href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2007:189:0001:0023:FR:PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European legislation<\/a> [PDF &#8211; 208 KB], in particular:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>no use of synthetic chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides&#8230;)<\/li><li>no use of GMOs<\/li><li>respect for animal welfare (transport, breeding conditions, slaughter\u2026)<\/li><li>For processed products, at least 95% of the ingredients must come from organic farming.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, the products that may be eligible for organic certification are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>unprocessed agricultural products<\/strong> (e.g., cereals, vegetables, fruits, cotton, milk, eggs, animals)<\/li><li><strong>processed agricultural products intended for human consumption<\/strong> (e.g., bread, cheeses, prepared meals)<\/li><li><strong>animal feed<\/strong> (e.g., soybean meal)<\/li><li><strong>seeds and vegetative propagation materials<\/strong> .<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The following products cannot be considered organic:<\/em><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>The products of <strong>hunting<\/strong> and <strong>fishing of wild species<\/strong> (wild boar, sardine, etc.) because it is not possible to control their diet and their breeding conditions.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Water<\/strong> and <strong>salt<\/strong> , because they are not agricultural ingredients.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Textiles<\/strong> , <strong>cosmetics<\/strong> , and other <strong>processed products not intended for human or animal consumption<\/strong> are also not covered by the regulations relating to organic farming and cannot be certified as organic within the meaning of these regulations.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>However, for this last category of products, if one or more of their agricultural components are organically grown and certified, this can be highlighted on the label (for example: &#8220;T-shirt made from organically grown cotton&#8221;). Furthermore, such products, if they meet specific requirements, can be certified to a private or non-profit standard. <\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How are organic products controlled?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All actors in the sector, from producers to retailers, must notify their activity to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agencebio.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">French Agency for the Development and Promotion of Organic Agriculture (Agence BIO)<\/a> . They are audited by approved third-party organizations, such as Ecocert, Certipaq, or Qualit\u00e9-France. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economie.gouv.fr\/dgccrf\">DGCCRF<\/a> carries out permanent checks on products marketed in the territory, whether they are produced in France or imported.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the organic labels?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the checks carried out by industry stakeholders, to allow consumers to verify the traceability of organic products, two official labels exist:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>AB logo<\/strong> : this is the French label created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. It certifies that a product contains at least 95% certified organic agricultural ingredients. The French <strong>AB<\/strong> logo is optional.  <\/li><li>The <strong>Euroleaf logo<\/strong> : this is the European label that identifies products meeting the specifications of organic farming. This EU logo is mandatory for organic products. It must be accompanied by a statement specifying the origin of the raw materials and the <strong>number of<\/strong> <strong>the certifying body<\/strong> . This number is composed of the international code for the country of production + BIO + a serial number, for example, for a product made in France: FR-BIO-09.
