This name comes from the Greek word Kallistos, meaning “the most beautiful.” So Callista would be… the most beautiful! That’s all \ud83d\ude09 It’s even become a name for girls. Okay, but what about in beer? Let’s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n

Origins<\/h2>\n\n

Callista<\/a> was a Christian living in Nicaea, Bithynia, Asia Minor. She was martyred around 304, during the persecution of Diocletian, along with her mother Theodota and her brothers Evodius and Hermogenes. According to Cajetan, hagiographer (or writer of the lives of saints ;-)), they were particularly venerated in Syracuse, Sicily, in the 7th and 8th centuries. <\/p>\n\n

On the brewing side, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a rather recent hop variety, which was developed by the Hop Research Center<\/a><\/em> in Hull, Germany and put on the market in 2016. It is the worthy descendant of Hallertayu Tradition<\/a> and a male H\u00fcll<\/a> . <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its nickname during the search period was 2010\/008\/033. Sexy! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of you may know him as Grungeist<\/em> or “grunge” \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Callista<\/a> is a typical aromatic hop, which is ideally expressed as a late addition to the broth or in dry hopping.<\/p>\n\n

Key flavors of Callista<\/a> hops include strawberry, pear, caramel, passion fruit, and orange.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Callista<\/a> delivers intense fruity flavors of passion fruit, apricot, peach and blackberry, along with a hint of pine.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes it an excellent choice for brewers looking to add a fruity touch to their beers, especially in delicate styles like pilsners or as late additions to pale ales and IPAs<\/a> .<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

The low alpha acid content<\/a> ensures that it will not add bitterness to your brew. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With an average of 52% myrcene oil, it’s one of the hops with the highest content! This also means you really need to be careful NOT TO OVERHEAT this hop: no oil really likes heat, but this one even less! So you’ll lose all the aromatic potential of this hop if you don’t take this into account \ud83d\ude09<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Longer boils will give you aromas of pine and citrus; shorter boils will frankly enhance the citrus and fruity side, with peeled orange being something that comes through quite frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
