Located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is made up of two main islands: the North Island and the South Island. Stewart Island and numerous smaller islands are located offshore.
New Zealand is a small country, similar in size to Great Britain or Japan, with a population of only four million people.
It has a temperate climate with fairly significant rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north of the country enjoys a subtropical climate in summer, and the central mountainous areas of the South Island can experience temperatures as low as -10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country is near the coast, which means mild temperatures.
Because New Zealand is located in the southern hemisphere, the seasons there are reversed compared to the northern half of the world.
Spectacular glaciers, picturesque fjords, rugged mountains, vast plains, gently sloping hills, subtropical forests, volcanic plateaus, miles of coastline with splendid beaches: it’s all there.

Its exceptional climate—sunshine, rainfall, and warmth—makes it a prime location for hop cultivation. Organic hops are even more so, as diseases are very rare there. After a few photos, I present these beauties from the islands 🙂
| MOTUEKA
Description : It was developed by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research and released to the market in 1996. It is a cross between a New Zealand variety and Saaz. It was also known as “Belgian Saaz” because it was widely used by a major Belgian brewery as a substitute for Saaz. Like Saaz, it has a high level of farnesene oil.

| WAI-TI
Description : This hop has brought a great freshness of lime and nuts since its introduction in 2011. It is descended from Mittelfrüh and has Liberty as its ancestor. With low levels of alpha acids and cohumulone, it develops a very mild bitterness, making it ideal for single-hop beers. Note that when added in the middle or at the end of the brew, the citrus notes recede into the background, allowing the nuts to become more prominent.

| PACIFIC GEM
Description : This hop variety was developed by the New Zealand Hop Breeding Programme and released to the market in 1987. It is among the hop varieties with a high alpha acid content.
Characteristics : fruity with red berry flavors sought after by many brewers.

| NELSON SAUVIN
Description : Nelson Sauvin was developed by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research as part of a new hop variety development program and was released to the market in 2000. It was created from the New Zealand Smoothcone hop and a selected male. It is an excellent all-around hop, capable of producing punchy ales as well as subtle, bitter lagers. Its name comes from the very specific Sauvignon Blanc aromas it develops.

| WAKATU
Description : Developed by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research and launched in 1988 as “Hallertau Aroma,” it was renamed “Wakatu” in 2011. It boasts a well-rounded aroma with a pleasant citrus freshness, while also offering excellent bittering capabilities. It can be successfully added at any stage of the brewing process and is known for its stable flavor.
