Solidarity

In August we supported the association Cruises for the Environment and the Learning of the Ocean (CREAL'O)

Creal'O, is a team that will sail 4 months in the Caribbean to meet local environmental actors to carry out humanitarian missions by moving in sailboat.

Yes, definitely!

Departure from France in October 2022 and return in June 2023...

Here we clarify things a bit, by taking their words from their web page.

Double transatlantic which has several objectives

Carry out scientific experiments

"First of all, we want to take advantage of our engineering background (industrial engineer, chemical engineer and engineer in electronics, electrical energy and automation) to give a useful dimension to our crossing. We are going to take scientific samples on board for the association of participative sciences Astrolabe Expeditions.

We participate in 3 of its marine biology programs:

SargaSea: we will collect Sargassum algae in the West Indies, identify them and note their position, dry them and bring them back for analysis by the University of Western Brittany. The objective of this study is to understand the processes behind the expansion of these holopelagic species, because since 2011, massive strandings of Sargassum cause major ecological, economic and societal damage in the Caribbean with catastrophic consequences for benthic fauna and flora and for human health.

Ketos: we will observe the cetaceans that we will meet on our way, identify them thanks to the shape of their fins, count them and send the information and the pictures to Astrolabe Expeditions. The aim of this study is to study the distribution and the seasonal movements of different cetacean species and to participate in the development of identification catalogs of different marine mammal observatories.

Planktidex: we will deploy plankton nets during the crossing and collect samples that we will send. The objective is to better understand the evolution of fish species through a better identification of larvae and to better understand the spatio-temporal distribution of the many species that make up the ichthyoplankton.

Raising awareness and helping locally

Then, we wish to meet local environmental actors to interview, through a friendly moment to exchange and create video content to raise awareness. This would allow us to make a mini Youtube series on environmental issues and the impact of man on the ecosystems of the Caribbean. We wish to carry out environmental missions in the islands where we will spend time with the local population: to do this we are in the process of contacting a maximum of associations that we wish to meet. We are already going to meet 3 associations in Guadeloupe and one association in Martinique. The list of our partners is visible in the tab Association/Partners.

Sharing with children

We are also going to share our adventure with CM1 students from the Veronique Hébert school in Poussan near Sète, CM2 students from the Lalande school in Toulouse and 5th graders from the Commandant Cousteau high school in Rognac near Marseille, in the form of a correspondence. Through videos explaining what we do on board, interviews with the people we meet and vlogs, we intend to make them aware of the marine environment, environmental issues and the fragility of our planet, as well as helping them discover a different world. We will meet the fifth graders of Toulouse in their school before our departure, to create a first link. We would like to make them sensitive from an early age to the themes that affect us personally."
