This month we decided to support an organization that helps people who, for one reason or another, have to flee their country of origin.

Why is this initiative important?

The action of this organization aims to guarantee the right to find asylum and safe refuge to any individual who has had to flee their country.

And when you look at the figures more closely, you understand how, unfortunately, this action is necessary.

More than 82.4 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes. Among them are almost 26.4 million refugees , more than half of whom are under 18 years old.

There are also millions of stateless people who have been deprived of nationality and access to basic rights such as education, healthcare, employment and freedom of movement.

Currently, 1 in 95 people have been forced to flee their homes because of conflict or persecution, making the work of UNHCR more important than ever.

A brief history lesson

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on 14 December 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The organization’s mandate is to direct and coordinate international action to protect refugees and seek solutions to refugee problems worldwide.

The primary goal of UNHCR is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. The organization therefore strives to ensure respect for everyone’s right to seek asylum and to find refuge in another state. Ultimately, the solutions it implements include return to the country of origin, integration into the host country, or resettlement in a third country.

For more than six decades, UNHCR has helped millions of people rebuild their lives. To date, UNHCR’s staff of more than 17,878 employees in 132 countries provides protection and assistance to 91.9 million refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons, and stateless people.

In addition, in the Middle East, some 5.7 million registered refugees fall under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
