Aurora: At the dawn of a new (beer) era…

“Seen it before but never really tried it? If you have a rather bland blonde, you should give it a go.”

To fully appreciate these aromas, I recommend:

  • A SMASH: 100% Pilsner, with 3g/l total (1g at the beginning, 1g 15 minutes before the end, 1g at 5 minutes, 1g at 0 minutes). A significant reduction to obtain a very dry beer.
  • A SINGLE HOP on a classic pale recipe: 1g at the beginning, 1g at 15 minutes from the end, 1g at 5 minutes, 1g at 0 minutes and a whirlpool for those with a sweet tooth.

Description

Aurora is a hop variety of Slovenian origin developed from Northern Brewer. It is also known as Super Styrian.

The beautiful balance of its essential oils brings an intense yet pleasant aroma to the beer. With nearly twice as much Alpha as Styrian Golding – another iconic Slovenian hop – it develops a gentle bitterness and a velvety smoothness.

Its relatively high myrcene oil content gives it a rich aromatic profile. But be careful not to overheat it! Longer boils will complement its original flavor profile and give you aromas of pine and citrus; shorter boils will definitely enhance the citrus and fruity notes, with peeled orange being a fairly common characteristic.

Analysis of the oils and interpretation

This batch is distinguished by an "Intense and Fresh Floral" profile. It is undoubtedly one of the most "fragrant" batches thanks to a record concentration of floral alcohols.

A Record Floral Bouquet (Linalool: 1.39%)

This is the highest Linalool content in the shop.

  • Sensory analysis: Linalool contributes notes of lavender, bergamot, and lily of the valley . At this level (1.39%), the hops have an extremely powerful, spring-like aroma. It's a very elegant signature that conveys a sense of high quality.

A Predominant Freshness (Myrcene: 34.70%)

  • Sensory analysis: Myrcene provides a solid base of pine resin and citrus zest . It acts as an amplifier for the floral notes, making the overall fragrance very lively and "punchy".

The Noble Structure (Humulene: 18.66%)

  • Sensory analysis: Although the floral and resinous notes are prominent, the humulene provides a woody and herbaceous base. This prevents the hops from seeming "artificial" or overly synthetic; it retains its European noble hop character.

The Return of the Farnesene (7.63%)

We see here a notable presence of beta-farnesene .

  • Sensory analysis: This compound provides a nuance of green apple and freshly cut grass . In small quantities, as here, it adds a very interesting layer of fruity "crunch" that complements the linalool well.

Usage Tips

Aurora is the ideal hop for the "nose" of beer.

  • The Ideal Moment: Dry Hopping

    • This is where it will shine brightest. As Linalool and Myrcene are highly volatile, adding them cold will help preserve the fragrance of white flowers and citrus.

    • Whirlpool (75-80°C): For a very aromatic beer without too much bitterness.

  • Preferred Style:

    • Witbier (Belgian White): Its floral notes and hint of green apple (farnesene) will pair beautifully with Belgian yeast and orange peel.

    • Modern Season: For a very floral and thirst-quenching version.

    • IPL (India Pale Lager): For a bottom-fermented beer that has the aromatic impact of an IPA.

  • Dosage advice:

    • Because it is highly concentrated in linalool, you can slightly reduce the quantities compared to a standard hop while still achieving a superior result.

    • Avoid boiling it for too long (no more than 15-20 minutes), as you would lose what makes it so special: its delicate floral fragrance.

It brings a rare floral elegance and a subtle fruity freshness. It's the perfect hop for a beer you want to make instantly appealing from the first sip.
