Motueka, the rock star!

“A must-have among NZ hops. A true Aromatic catalyst Aromatic works in all styles of beer. Just a few grams in a thirst-quenching lager and a half-pint becomes a pint, and one pint leads to another... and soon the keg is empty. It is one of the few hops that can release citrus aromas at all stages of brewing."

Here are some use cases:

  • In a thirst-quenching pale ale: 2 g/L in the whirlpool to enhance the flavor without altering it.
  • In a versatile IPA: A DH of 3 g/L during primary fermentation is sufficient to release pleasant fruity aromas.
  • In a NEIPA: A DH of 6 g/L during fermentation to obtain exotic fruit flavors + A DH during aging to obtain the "cocktail" effect.

It was the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research that developed Motueka™ and released it in 1996. Another interesting fact is that this hop is a cross between a New Zealand variety and the very famous Saaz. Also known as " Saaz Belgian," Motueka™ has been widely used by a major Belgian brewery as a substitute for Saaz. Like the latter, it has a high level of farnesene oil.
