Who is JUST DIGGIT?

And how does Justdiggit help to combat CO₂ emissions and cool the planet?

Justdiggit is a Dutch foundation whose goal is to restore degraded ecosystems by developing, initiating, and co-financing large-scale landscape restoration programs in Africa. Our reforestation projects help restore soil moisture balance and revitalize vegetation, positively impacting the local and regional climate, increasing food and water security, and promoting biodiversity in project areas. We collaborate with local partners and communities on our projects. The communities involved directly benefit from our programs as we create a better living environment and contribute to economic development. Our unique approach is a media and communications strategy, utilizing all available communication and media channels at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Through these sponsored media campaigns, we aim to amplify the impact of landscape restoration programs and create a landscape restoration movement, promoting reforestation across Africa.

Digging to make it green again?

According to a study by The Nature Conservancy , 37% of the climate change problem can be addressed through nature-based solutions. And that is precisely the aim of the actions undertaken by JUST DIGGIT .

“By digging more than 360,000 semi-circular dikes, we have succeeded in revitalizing the vegetation of the Kuku collective ranches, bringing environmental gains and making the land useful to the community again.

The Kuku collective ranches are located in southern Kenya and represent a vital wildlife corridor between Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park. The collective ranch is home to approximately 29,000 Maasai who rely primarily on the land for their income and food.

Due to overgrazing and climate change, the region has become extremely arid, making it difficult for local communities to make a living from the land. Working with the local Maasai community and our local partner, the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT) , we have begun restoring these degraded lands. By digging rainwater harvesting dikes and creating grass seed banks, we are reforesting 3,834 hectares in the region. To date, the Maasai community has dug 369,000 dikes and established seven grass seed banks, which are managed by five independent women’s groups.
