Description

It was the Slovenian Hop Research Institute that developed Styrian Fox, initially given the sweet name “102/44” 🙂

This is a recent variety, which has barely touched the ground in organic farming: HOPSTORE offers it to you exclusively!

Initial feedback from brewers highlights highly appreciated fruity notes…!

Its myrcene oil level is quite high (between 50 and 60%), which makes it a very expressive, very fresh hop.

Analysis of the oils and interpretation

This batch presents a profile that could be described as "Quiet Strength" . It is one of the most balanced, offering a solid structure without any single aroma completely overpowering the others.

A Controlled Balance (Myrcene vs Humulene)

With 35.33% Myrcene and 24.25% Humulene , we have a perfect match:

  • Sensory result: A fresh, lemony attack (Myrcene) that immediately blends into a woody, earthy, and very elegant body (Humulene). This is the typical profile of a top-quality hop for bottom-fermented beers.

The Touch of Complexity (Linalool & Nerolidol)

  • Linalool (0.83%) : Brings this floral note (lavender/citrus) which gives lightness.

  • Trans-nerolidol (0.61%) : This is an interesting concentration. This compound brings nuances of precious wood and dried flowers . It enhances the "noble" character of Humulene, giving it a more complex and profound dimension.

Purity and Finesse

  • Caryophyllene (8.51%) : Present in good measure for its spicy character, but perfectly balanced by the high humulene content (ratio ~2.8). This ensures a delicate bitterness and aromas, never harsh.

  • Farnesene (0.30%) : Very low, which confirms an absence of unwanted vegetal notes.

Advice for the Brewer

Styrian Fox is the hop of elegant versatility :

  • Usage: It will excel at the end of boiling (10-15 min) to build the aromatic body of the beer, but its Linalool and Nerolidol content also makes it a very good candidate for a moderate temperature Whirlpool .

  • Recommended style: A traditional Pilsner , a Kellerbier (cellar beer) or a Belgian Blonde where subtle complexity is sought rather than a fruity explosion.

It will add a lot of drinkability and distinction to your recipe.
