Reducing our environmental impact is everyone’s responsibility, including ours. We’ve already implemented a number of measures (which you can find here ), and I’d like to introduce you to our latest initiative!

There’s no point in beating around the bush: the multi-layered bags used to package hops are an ecological disaster. They’re food-grade, opaque, and sturdy, but… impossible to recycle; they end up being incinerated. They perfectly reflect the linear economic model of resource extraction, production, consumption, and waste, a model we must now break free from.

For 20, 10, or 5 kg pellet packaging, there aren’t really any credible, mainstream alternatives at the moment. It’s a frequent topic of conversation, and some farms, particularly in the US, are working on developing new materials, but it’s not easy. The material’s characteristics are demanding.

For the repackaging or “small bags” as they are called, we made the decision to choose a different material, a recyclable one!

You can’t miss them, they’re all white and contain only 0% (haha) aluminum. They’re made of PE-EVOH, designed to hold food and suitable for gas injection.

They are less resistant and less opaque than traditional multilayers, but that’s the price to pay (literally, because they are more expensive) so that they can be recycled.

We decided to use them anyway because these “small bags” need to be kept cool like their larger counterparts (fridge or freezer) and therefore protected from light. Also, since they only contain a maximum of one kilo of pellets, we considered them durable enough. They’ve already started arriving, and so far, so good. Yay!!

So there you have it, now you can put your little bags of organic hops in the recycling bin. It’s a small step, but it’s progress nonetheless 😉
