The Select variety was launched in 1993. It was bred in the Hüll region of Germany as a replacement for Spalt, with the aim of increasing production yields and disease resistance. From that perspective, it works well!
It is therefore a cross between Spalt and Hallertau Mittelfrüher and benefits from their respective characteristics. It is known to be slightly spicier than Spalt.
For those interested, it’s a nice substitute for Saaz ; )
