The Sultana of Oregon

“Sultana is making a big comeback. Like Willamette or Mount Hood, it’s a versatile, fruity hop that’s easy to dose. It enhances the flavor without being too distinctive.”

Particularly fresh and powerful with a slightly mentholated effect. Worth discovering.

Analysis of the oils and interpretation

If you are looking for a hop with character and freshness, this batch is for you.

Maximum Freshness (Myrcene: 41.42%)

This is a very high level of Myrcene.

  • Sensory result: An extremely powerful nose of fresh pine, resin and orange zest . This is the component that gives this "lively" and thirst-quenching beer sensation.

The Quintessence of Noble Hops (Humulene: 22.85%)

Humulene is also very high, with a perfect ratio to Caryophyllene (ratio of ~2.5).

  • Sensory result: Despite the power of the Myrcene, this hop retains a rare elegance. One finds the woody, earthy, and herbaceous notes of the best Saaz or Hallertau hops, but with much more intensity.

A complex floral bouquet (Linalool + Geraniol)

Containing 0.71% Linalool and 0.62% Geraniol :

  • Sensory result: These two oils work together to bring nuances of lavender and rose . This softens the resinous aspect of the Myrcene, making the whole very harmonious.

Absence of Farnesene (0.05%)

Here, the Farnese is almost non-existent. The profile is therefore clean, pure and focused on the forest and flowers .

Advice for the Brewer

This hop is a gem. It's the ultimate "all-purpose" hop:

  • Usage: It is magnificent when bittering (for its clarity) but it would almost be a shame not to use it in Dry Hopping or Late Addition (end of boiling) to take advantage of its 41% Myrcene.

  • Recommended style: A competition Pilsner , a characterful Helles or even a West Coast IPA if you want an "old school" resinous and floral profile rather than a tropical one.
